My Name is Sara and I'm an Internet Slut

I admit it, I'm addicted...... to blogs, websites, writers loops, msn.... you name it I'm there - lurking, posting, both... at the expense of my writing. And every day before getting out of bed I say to myself: 'Today will be different. Today, in between my other work, I'm going to write my butt off.'

And do I? What do you think?

So, I've decided to announce publicly that, starting tomorrow, I will not do any surfing until I've written three new pages - apart from checking my emails, there could be important stuff in my inbox, like emails from my agent or editor!!

I thought long and hard about how many pages it should be, and because I spend time editing what I did the previous writing session(s) I knew it couldn't be too many, or I'd be setting myself up to fail.

Hopefully this will work - I'll be reporting in.

How do you fight those internet demons? I'd love to hear.

Comments:
Sadly Sara, the internet demons have me in their grip.
The only way I've managed to fight them is to get out of the house. I have a laptop which does not have a wireless card (yet) and a palm with a keyboard that I haven't even tried to web-enable. I can first draft on the palm. Can't edit on it... but I usually get dragged into surfing when first drafting anyway.

Sara I once went a week without internet (on purpose!). It was hell, BUT at the same time I had so much extra free time, and strangely enough I've been considering doing this again. Might have to join you on the three page rule!

If I blog hop before I've written any pages, I'm done for. So I won't let myself play until I've got at least 5 pages down. It's really hard sometimes but the trouble with the internet is time disappears sooo fast once I log on!

I don't. I've totally become a crazed addict.

I have to get out of the house to avoid the temptation.
It's terrible....

Hi Sara:
I've started using my blog--and visiting other blogs--as almost like a writing exercise. I give in to it for twenty minutes a day . . . like a warm-up. But I will be the first to admit, it can be an addicting devil!

Erica, for me it's all or nothing. I don't think I could limit myself to 20 minutes.

I did my 3 pages this morning - with lots of real life interuptions. And it felt good. I'll probably write some more this afternoon. Though dh informs me that I can't offset any extra pages I do against tomorrows target - how unfair is that!!!

Christina I admire your willpower. Janet, Amanda and Maureen - you better jump on my bandwagon!

I, Jennifer Echols, have successfully tamed the internet demons. I set my e-mail account to send a text message to my cell phone if I get e-mail from my agent or my editor. ;)

Jennifer - I am seriously impressed (says the girl who can't even send a text message!)

Wow, Jennifer. How do you do that?

When I first read your techinique, I thought that is totally cool. Then I began to panic. That would mean no email either before I've done my pages.... then I got scared!!

Btw, 3 pages done by 9.15am..... I'm seriously kicking butt here!

Yeah, I've given in. The first thing I do in the morning is check my email, and it's the last thing I do before I go to sleep! I suppose there are worse things to be addicted to, though :)

Sara, I, too, am an internet whore...it's such a procrastination problem, but yeah, I find that once I set deadlines and goals for myself, I'm able to stop surfing long enough to meet the goals! And then, once I've gone back and checked all of those sites...I haven't really missed anything. So pathetic!

I know what you mean, Allison, about finding you've missed nothing when you check. Thing is... there could be that one time when you find you've missed something really exciting. It's not worth the risk. You have to check, lol.

So far my goals are working. In fact today I sent off a brand new chapter to my CPs .
